The “miscellaneous essay” is not some novel product; it has, in fact, existed since “ancient times.” All essays can be categorized by their subjects or genre, but if only according to their dates of completion chronologically, different kinds of essays, collected together regardless of their form, are then turned into a “miscellany.”
