閖 (Kangxi radical 169,門+4, 12 strokes,cangjie input日弓水 (ANE),composition⿵門水)
Originates from China, possibly a variant of澇. It appears in theLongkan Shoujian as being pronounced as澇 (MC law|lawX|lawH) or勞 (MC law|lawH). Often mistaken for a国字(kokuji), theゆり(yuri) andしなたり(shinatari) readings are instead an instance of国訓(kokkun).[1][2]
Folk etymology claims that it was coined byDate Tsunamura when he was looking out at the sea through the gate ofDainenji Temple inSendai;[3] however, the character greatly predates him.
