 ナズナ on Japanese Wikipedia
(nazuna): the flower of theshepherd's purse.
Wikimedia Commons has media about:

/nad͡zuna/ >/nazuna/

Unclear. There are two leading theories, based on older formnadzuna:

  • May be derived fromnatsu na, as in(natsu, summer) +(na,missing, gone), from the way the plant dies back in the summer.
  • May be derived fromnadzuru na, as in撫づる(nadzuru,to pet, to pat, to stroke, the連体形(rentaikei, attributive form) ofOld Japanese verb撫づnadzu, modernJapanese撫でるnaderu) +(na,edible greens), from the way the flower clusters may invite handling.
