Schuessler (2007) proposes anAustroasiatic origin; compareKharia[script needed](ɲoʔ,to eat) andProto-Vietic*s-nja:ʔ(to chew, to masticate) (>Vietnamesenhá).Schuessler (2003) also compares 茹 with Jingphonoʔ¹ 'to eat' and Proto-Mienic*ʔnəkD 'to swallow'.
