FromOld Japanese, a compound of水(mi,“water”) +な(na,alternative form of possessive particleの(no)) +月(tsuki,“month”).[1][2] Thetsuki changes tozuki as an instance ofrendaku (連濁). Originally referred to the month in whichrice paddies need moreirrigation;[1][2] the use of the kanji無(“not; none; without”) to spell thena portion is in reference to this need for more water. However, thena was initially the alternative form of possessive / genitive particleの(no), and the無 kanji is thus an example of phoneticateji (当て字).[1][2]
