Etymology

[edit]

FromOld Japanese, a compound of(mi,water) +‎(na,alternative form of possessive particle(no)) +‎(tsuki,month).[1][2] Thetsuki changes tozuki as an instance ofrendaku ((れん)(だく)). Originally referred to the month in whichrice paddies need moreirrigation;[1][2] the use of the kanji(not; none; without) to spell thena portion is in reference to this need for more water. However, thena was initially the alternative form of possessive / genitive particle(no), and the kanji is thus an example of phoneticateji (()()).[1][2]
