Term first attested around theTenshō era (1573-1592).

The連用形(ren'yōkei,stem or continuative form) of verb傾く(kabuku,totilt, tolean).[1][2]

The kanji spelling is an example of phono-semanticateji (()()), literally "song,dance, andskill".
