岬
- side of a mountain
- (geography)cape
- Synonyms:角,海角(hǎijiǎo)
岬
(Jōyō kanji)
- peninsula;promontory;cape;spit
- Synonym:崎
FromOld Japanese. First attested in theNihon Shoki of 720.[1]
Analyzable as a compound ofみ(mi,see below) +先(saki,“tip,point;promontory”).[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Themi prefix is likely the honorific prefix御(mi-), and the termmisaki is attested explicitly with the spelling御碕(mi-saki) in theNihon Shoki.[1]
Alternative theories as to the identity of theみ(mi) include:
- 水(mi,“water”,bound prefix form of水(mizu)), although the semantics this suggests may instead mean “water tip”, i.e. a jutting-out of water, not of land — an inlet.
- Shift from海(umi,“sea”), with the same consideration as above.
