FromOld Japanese. First attested in theNihon Shoki of 720.[1]

Analyzable as a compound of(mi,see below) +(さき)(saki,tip,point;promontory).[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Themi prefix is likely the honorific prefix()(mi-), and the termmisaki is attested explicitly with the spelling()(さき)(mi-saki) in theNihon Shoki.[1]

Alternative theories as to the identity of the(mi) include:

  • ()(mi,water,bound prefix form of(みず)(mizu)), although the semantics this suggests may instead mean “water tip”, i.e. a jutting-out of water, not of land — an inlet.
  • Shift from(うみ)(umi, sea), with the same consideration as above.
