Originally written as巖 –phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声,OC*ŋraːm): semantic 山(“hill”) + phonetic 嚴(OC*ŋam). The variant form岩 first appeared in the clerical script in the Han dynasty era.
Cognate with嚴 (OC*ŋam, “majestic; stern; grave”) and儼 (OC*ŋamʔ, “dignified; majestic”). See嚴 for more.
