Oracle bone script: Ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): (house) + (food or wine vessel) + (table (?)) – contentment. The (“heart”) component was added inbronze inscriptions to yield, and the component was sometimes omitted to yield.

Shuowen:Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声,OC*neːŋ): phonetic (OC*neːŋ) + semantic (speech (?)).

Note that the simplified form (zhù) is also a traditional character on its own.
