Orthographic borrowing fromJapanese匁(monme)
Pronunciation borrowed from兩/两 (liǎng).
匁
A国字(kokuji,“Japanese-coined character”). Variant form of錢 through an intermediate form𬌩 obtained by simplifying the right-hand side.[1]
Folk etymology considers it to be a ligature of文(mon) andメ(me), as the unit of distance could also be written as文目(monme).
漢典 (zdic.net) posits the origin as aregular script form of兩(ryō), but this is dubious because the value of the兩 was between 4 and 10momme, and is now either 50g (mainland China) or 37.5g (Taiwan), and of similar value in Hong Kong; i.e., the units are essentially not equivalent.
Removed from the daily useJōyō kanji by the Japanese government in 2010.[2]
