The current standard in Mainland China, theTable of General Standard Chinese Characters (通用规范汉字表), does not mention that is a simplification of().A Dictionary of Current Chinese (现代汉语词典) and theXinhua Dictionary (新华字典) list as a separate entry from() (unlike other variants, which are usually put beside the main character in parentheses) and define as a common variant for(), whileXiandai Hanyu Guifan Cidian (现代汉语规范词典) proscribes the use of as the simplified form of().

Similar to the surnames and, the surname() and were also originally distinct, and() was originally a rare surname. The modern surname() is mostly due to second-round simplification of Chinese characters.
