  • The letter was used to represent/v/ in theOld National Pronunciation (1913–1932). Now it is only used for dialectal pronunciations. In the old alphabet, it was the 5th letter, between and.
  • 《汉语拼音方案》 defines a standard Pinyin pronunciation for each letter, usingv to represent(), which is obsolete in standard Mandarin. This is one of the only instances of the letterv being used in standard Pinyin.
