1. Adiacritical mark of theGreek script, calledδασεῖα(daseîa,“rough”) in Ancient Greek, and found onἁ(ἁ)/ἑ(ἑ),ἡ(ἡ)/ἱ(ἱ),ὁ(ὁ)/ῥ(ῥ) andὑ(ὑ)/ὡ(ὡ). It is also known by its Latin namespīritus asper or the English namerough breathing. It was originally used to indicate the presence of the sound/h/ before a vowel or/r/ but continued to be used even after/h/ had disappeared from the language.
