Usage notes

[edit]

In the Mongolian script, derivational affixes are similar to those in English, in that they attach directly to the stem. On the other hand, inflectional affixes are orthographically detached from the stem (represented in Unicode byU+202FNARROW NO-BREAK SPACE). The nirugu is therefore used in grammar and linguistic texts to denote the difference when displaying affixes in isolation. For example:

  • ᠊ᠳᠤᠭᠠᠷ(-duɣar)(derivational; with nirugu; denotes an ordinal number)
    ᠬᠣᠶᠠᠳᠤᠭᠠᠷqoyaduɣarsecond
  • ᠠᠴᠠ(ača)(inflectional; without nirugu; denotes the ablative case)
    ᠬᠣᠲᠠ ᠠᠴᠠqota-ačafrom the city
