Inherited fromProto-Southwestern Tai*petᴰˢ²(“duck”), fromProto-Tai*pitᴰ(“duck”).[1] The vowel ofเป็ด [pet̚ᴰˢ¹] shows irregularity as a reflex of Proto-Tai*pitᴰ. Such reflexes in Southwestern Tai such as Thai and many Central Tai dialects suggest that this etymon might in fact be a post-Proto-Tai loan.[2] The unaspirated /p-/ indicates an early date of borrowing.[2]
