FromProto-Indo-Iranian*tanúHs(body, self), fromProto-Indo-European*tenuh₂-(body). Cognate withAvestan𐬙𐬀𐬥𐬎(tanu,body, self),Old Persian𐎫𐎵𐎢𐏁(t-nu-u-š/⁠tanūš⁠/). The reflexive use is an Indo-Iranian innovation.
