Only written in the final position, transliteratedā. Calledأَلِف مَقْصُورَة(ʔalif maqṣūra,“limited, restricted alif”) orأَلِف لَيِّنَة(ʔalif layyina,“flexible alif”). In the rare case of arasm version of Quran, it is theyāʾ version.

Represents the back vowel phoneme /ə/, unless a smallء (hamza) was placed in the beginning of the word. In Kazakh the Hamza marks that all vowels in the following word are fronted. If ى is the initial letter of a word and is representing a front vowel, it is combined with the hamza and the variantٸ is used.
