مُرَّانFraxinus ornus
 مران on Arabic Wikipedia

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed fromAramaicמוֹרָנָא /*ܡܘܿܪܴܢܳܐ(mōrānā), itself borrowed fromAkkadian𒄑𒈠𒉡𒅊𒅊(GIŠ.MA.NU.SIG₇.SIG₇/murrānu/). Equivalent toمُرّ(murr, bitter) +‎ـَان(-ān) from the rootم ر ر(m r r), for the fruits of the ash are bitter; though Fleischer related it to the rootم ر ن(m r n) due to the pliable wood being used for spears, likeOld Englishæsċ(ash),Ancient Greekμελία(melía,ash) andAramaicמוֹרָנִיתָא /ܡܘܿܪܴܢܺܝܬܴܐ(mōrānīṯā, literallyash-stick) specifically denote a spear as well—the presence of this root in the otherSemitic languages is not without doubt.
