Stressed[ʲe] regularly developed into[ʲɵ] before hard consonants. The letterё(jo) was later created to reflect this, thediaresis probably being inspired by the German diaeresis being used forumlaut, but is often ignored in print. Its first appearance in typography was in 1797.

  • When[ʲɵ],[jɵ] do not go back to etymologicalе(je), they are normally speltьо(ʹo) andйо(jo), as inбатальон(batalʹon),район(rajon). However,ё(jo) is used to represent the front-rounded vowels/ø/,/œ/ of languages like French and German, as inКёльн(Kjolʹn).
