Uncertain. Three hypotheses exist:
- FromProto-Slavic*dъskatьrtь. Bysurface analysis,доска́(doská,“board,plank”) +тере́ть(terétʹ,“torub”). Compare with archaicру́котерть(rúkotertʹ,“towel”) asрука́(ruká,“hand,arm”) +тере́ть(terétʹ,“torub”),Latinmanutergium(“hand towel”) asmanus(“hand”) +tergeō(“torub,wipe,clean”) +-ium.
- FromProto-Slavic*ska +Proto-Slavic*tьrtь, thus making it cognate withскать(skatʹ).
- FromGermanSchetter (also writtenSchechter), a regional term for a rigid loincloth.

Podskátertʹ rekomendújetsja podložítʹ flanélʹ ili kakúju-nibudʹ drugúju tjažóluju mjáxkuju tkanʹ:skátertʹ ljážet rovnéje, stuk tarélok i pribórov smjaxčítsja. - Cover the table with white, well-pressedtablecloth. Middle fold of thetablecloth should be at the center of the table. It is recommended to place flannel or some other type of heavy, soft cloth underneath -tablecloth will be resting straight and the noise of plates and silverware will be reduced.
