Etymology

[edit]

FromClassical Mongolianᠨᠢ(ni), as well postposedᠢᠨᠤ(inu),ᠠᠨᠤ(anu), from postposedMiddle Mongolᠢᠨ᠌ᠤ(inu,3sg-poss) andᠠᠨ᠌ᠤ(anu,3pl-poss).

(-n) was an oblique suffix originally after a personal pronoun’s stem, while() is the unique suffix for possessive particles. Original determiners were merged into a single particle, so morphemesi anda which denote grammatical numbers, were omitted.
