In writing,във is used in front of words starting withв orф andв is used elsewhere. In speech,в andвъв are used interchangeably. In writing and in speech,във is also used as a stressed form ofв, even before words not beginning withв orф, as in

Тя евъв къщата, а не отвън.
Tja evǎv kǎštata, a ne otvǎn.
She isin the house, not outside.

In verse,във can also be used in front of words not starting withв orф in order to maintain the syllable structure of the line.
