Alternative forms

Etymology

[edit]

A medical expression. Formally it may be compared withὑστέρα(hustéra,uterus, womb) and names of diseases likeἴκτερος(íkteros, jaundice) andὕδερος(húderos, dropsy). Perhaps, this word is asubstantivization from unattested*χολερός(*kholerós), with shift of accent. According to Beekes, a basic derivation is more likely fromχολή(kholḗ,gall, bile) than fromχολάς(kholás,entrails, guts), but aPre-Greek origin cannot be ruled out.Irishgalar(sickness, illness) has to be kept separate.
