From the similarity of thestigma (Ϛ), a Byzantineligature of the common Greekconsonant clusterσ-τ usingsigma'slunate formϲ, with the medieval variant of the numerical form ofdigamma (), employed inGreek numerals for the value six, its place in theepichoricMilesian Greek alphabet (where it was more often writtenϜ).
