From aMiddle Dutch spelling for/iː/, representing a variation of ⟨ii⟩, which tended to be avoided. Besides ⟨ij⟩, another common form was ⟨y⟩. The pronunciation changed to/ɛi̯/ in Early Modern Dutch throughdiphthongization, at first in Brabant.
