From the wordfleur, aflower. From Latinflorem, originally meaningflower but also 'thebest part [of something]', 'theupper part', & finally 'thesurface'. It was from the latter sense that the phraseà fleur de arose in the middle of the 14th century tosignify 'on the surface of'.
