Etymology

[edit]

Created byOtto Wilhelm Masing and typesetter Carl Michler (who proposed using the Greek circumflex) in 1819. Masing had, for a few years, experimented with different diacritics for the letter O to write the sound which, until then, was spelled variously withO,Ö orE. It took until later in the century for the letter to catch on.
