Tar′bell, Ida Minerva. A noted Americanwriter upon historical and economicsubjects. Born in Erie County, Pennsylvania,on Nov. 5, 1857, she grew up in theoil-region. She graduated with honors fromTitusville High School and AlleghenyCollege, and studied in Paris, 1891-4, at theSorbonne and the College of France whereshe began to make her mark as anhistorical writer. She for eight years wasassociate-editor ofThe Chautauquan, laterwas on the editorial staff ofMcClure'sMagazine, and finally was an associate-editorof it. Among her writings areShortLife of Napoleon Bonaparte;Life of MadamRoland;Life of Abraham Lincoln; andHistory of the Standard Oil Company. Shehas written extensively for magazines.
