ANDRONICUS II.(Palæologus),Emperor, was born1260. He was the elder son ofMichael Palæologus, whom he succeeded in1283. During his reign theTurks underOsman conquered nearly the whole ofBithynia; and to resist them the emperor called in the aid ofRoger de Flor, who commanded abody of adventurers. TheTurks were defeated, butRoger was found to be nearly as formidable an enemy to theimperial power.He wasassassinated in1308.His adventurers declaredwar upon Andronicus, and after devastatingThrace andMacedonia, settled in thesouthern part ofGreece. From1320 onwards the emperor was engaged inwar with his grandson,Andronicus, in whose favour he was compelled toabdicate,1328. He retired to aconvent, and died about1334.
