Joel
1 The word of Jehovah that came to Joel the son ofPethuel.
2 Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all yeinhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or in thedays of your fathers?
3 Tell ye your children of it, and[let] your children [tell] their children, and their childrenanother generation.
4 That which the palmer-worm hath lefthath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left haththe canker-worm eaten; and that which the canker-worm hath lefthath the caterpillar eaten.
5 Awake, ye drunkards, and weep;and wail, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine;for it is cut off from your mouth.
6 For a nation is come upupon my land, strong, and without number; his teeth are theteeth of a lion, and he hath the jaw-teeth of a lioness.
7 He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig-tree: he hath madeit clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are madewhite.
8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for thehusband of her youth.
9 The meal-offering and thedrink-offering are cut off from the house of Jehovah; thepriests, Jehovah's ministers, mourn.
10 The field is laidwaste, the land mourneth; for the grain is destroyed, the newwine is dried up, the oil languisheth.
11 Be confounded, Oye husbandmen, wail, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and forthe barley; for the harvest of the field is perished.
12 Thevine is withered, and the fig-tree languisheth; thepomegranate-tree, the palm-tree also, and the apple-tree, evenall the trees of the field are withered: for joy is witheredaway from the sons of men.
13 Gird yourselves [withsackcloth], and lament, ye priests; wail, ye ministers of thealtar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God:for the meal-offering and the drink-offering are withholden fromthe house of your God.
14 Sanctify a fast, call a solemnassembly, gather the old men [and] all the inhabitants of theland unto the house of Jehovah your God, and cry unto Jehovah.
15 Alas for the day! for the day of Jehovah is at hand, andas destruction from the Almighty shall it come.
16 Is notthe food cut off before our eyes, [yea], joy and gladness fromthe house of our God?
17 The seeds rot under their clods;the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; forthe grain is withered.
18 How do the beasts groan! the herdsof cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, theflocks of sheep are made desolate.
19 O Jehovah, to thee doI cry; for the fire hath devoured the pastures of thewilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of thefield.
20 Yea, the beasts of the field pant unto thee; forthe water brooks are dried up, and the fire hath devoured thepastures of the wilderness.
1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in myholy mountain; let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: forthe day of Jehovah cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
2 a dayof darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,as the dawn spread upon the mountains; a great people and astrong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be anymore after them, even to the years of many generations.
3 Afire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: theland is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them adesolate wilderness; yea, and none hath escaped them.
4 Theappearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and ashorsemen, so do they run.
5 Like the noise of chariots onthe tops of the mountains do they leap, like the noise of aflame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people setin battle array.
6 At their presence the peoples are inanguish; all faces are waxed pale.
7 They run like mightymen; they climb the wall like men of war; and they march everyone on his ways, and they break not their ranks.
8 Neitherdoth one thrust another; they march every one in his path; andthey burst through the weapons, and break not off [theircourse].
9 They leap upon the city; they run upon the wall;they climb up into the houses; they enter in at the windows likea thief.
10 The earth quaketh before them; the heavenstremble; the sun and the moon are darkened, and the starswithdraw their shining.
11 And Jehovah uttereth his voicebefore his army; for his camp is very great; for he is strongthat executeth his word; for the day of Jehovah is great andvery terrible; and who can abide it?
12 Yet even now, saithJehovah, turn ye unto me with all your heart, and with fasting,and with weeping, and with mourning:
13 and rend your heart,and not your garments, and turn unto Jehovah your God; for he isgracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant inlovingkindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
14 Whoknoweth whether he will not turn and repent, and leave ablessing behind him, even a meal-offering and a drink-offeringunto Jehovah your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctifya fast, call a solemn assembly;
16 gather the people,sanctify the assembly, assemble the old men, gather thechildren, and those that suck the breasts; let the bridegroom goforth from his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
17 Let the priests, the ministers of Jehovah, weep between theporch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, OJehovah, and give not thy heritage to reproach, that the nationsshould rule over them: wherefore should they say among thepeoples, Where is their God?
18 Then was Jehovah jealous forhis land, and had pity on his people.
19 And Jehovahanswered and said unto his people, Behold, I will send yougrain, and new wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfiedtherewith; and I will no more make you a reproach among thenations;
20 but I will remove far off from you the northern[army], and will drive it into a land barren and desolate, itsforepart into the eastern sea, and its hinder part into thewestern sea; and its stench shall come up, and its ill savorshall come up, because it hath done great things.
21 Fearnot, O land, be glad and rejoice; for Jehovah hath done greatthings.
22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field; for thepastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth itsfruit, the fig-tree and the vine do yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in Jehovah yourGod; for he giveth you the former rain in just measure, and hecauseth to come down for you the rain, the former rain and thelatter rain, in the first [month].
24 And the floors shallbe full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with new wine andoil.
25 And I will restore to you the years that the locusthath eaten, the canker-worm, and the caterpillar, and thepalmer-worm, my great army which I sent among you.
26 And yeshall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and shall praise the nameof Jehovah your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you; and mypeople shall never be put to shame.
27 And ye shall knowthat I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am Jehovah yourGod, and there is none else; and my people shall never be put toshame.
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I willpour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and yourdaughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, youryoung men shall see visions:
29 and also upon the servantsand upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit.
30 And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall beturned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the greatand terrible day of Jehovah cometh.
32 And it shall come topass, that whosoever shall call on the name of Jehovah shall bedelivered; for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall bethose that escape, as Jehovah hath said, and among the remnantthose whom Jehovah doth call.
1 For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when Ishall bring back the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 Iwill gather all nations, and will bring them down into thevalley of Jehoshaphat; and I will execute judgment upon themthere for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they havescattered among the nations: and they have parted my land,
3 and have cast lots for my people, and have given a boy for aharlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.
4 Yea, and what are ye to me, O Tyre, and Sidon, and all theregions of Philistia? will ye render me a recompense? and if yerecompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return yourrecompense upon your own head.
5 Forasmuch as ye have takenmy silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples mygoodly precious things,
6 and have sold the children ofJudah and the children of Jerusalem unto the sons of theGrecians, that ye may remove them far from their border;
7 behold, I will stir them up out of the place whither ye havesold them, and will return your recompense upon your own head;
8 and I will sell your sons and your daughters into the handof the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the men ofSheba, to a nation far off: for Jehovah hath spoken it.
9 Proclaim ye this among the nations; prepare war; stir up themighty men; let all the men of war draw near, let them come up.
10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning-hooksinto spears: let the weak say, I am strong.
11 Haste ye, andcome, all ye nations round about, and gather yourselvestogether: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Jehovah.
12 Let the nations bestir themselves, and come up to thevalley of Jehoshaphat; for there will I sit to judge all thenations round about.
13 Put ye in the sickle; for theharvest is ripe: come, tread ye; for the winepress is full, thevats overflow; for their wickedness is great.
14 Multitudes,multitudes in the valley of decision! for the day of Jehovah isnear in the valley of decision.
15 The sun and the moon aredarkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.
16 AndJehovah will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem;and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but Jehovah will be arefuge unto his people, and a stronghold to the children ofIsrael.
17 So shall ye know that I am Jehovah your God,dwelling in Zion my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy,and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.
18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shalldrop down sweet wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, andall the brooks of Judah shall flow with waters; and a fountainshall come forth from the house of Jehovah, and shall water thevalley of Shittim.
19 Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edomshall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to thechildren of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood intheir land.
20 But Judah shall abide for ever, and Jerusalemfrom generation to generation. <section end=3:20/
21 And I will cleanse theirblood, that I have not cleansed: for Jehovah dwelleth in Zion.
