Twins are twooffspring produced by the samepregnancy. Twins can be eithermonozygotic ("identical"), meaning that they develop from onezygote, which splits and forms twoembryos, ordizygotic ("fraternal"), meaning that they develop from two different eggs. In fraternal twins, each twin is fertilized by its own sperm cell.

If you’ve ever sat in a room with twins, immediately you’re forced to deal with thisconfusion. You’re afraid to call them byname because you’reafraid you’re going to get itwrong. At first being a twin is a source ofpower, you can switch, you canfoolpeople—but then it becomes avulnerability because people confuse you when you don’t want them to. Thefamousstory of the twins who were bothspanked when either one of them did something wrong because theparents wanted to make sure they got the right twin. So that would immediately make each twin totallyresponsible for the other one’sactions and therefore would make you want tocontrol the other twin’s actions. It gets quite twisted and the confusion ofidentities becomes quite intense.
