Maine (IPA: /meɪn/; French:État du Maine) is a state in theNew England region of the northeasternUnited States, bordered by theAtlantic Ocean to the east and south,New Hampshire to the west, and theCanadian provinces ofQuebec to the northwest andNew Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is the easternmost state of the US, and the northernmost state of New England. It was admitted to the Union under theMissouri Compromise on March 15, 1820, as the 23rd state. It is the 39th most extensive and the 41st most populous of the 50 United States.
