Why, Connor? Why did you have to wake up, when all you had to do was obey?
Detroit: Become Human is a 2018 interactive drama adventure video game developed by Quantic Dream. Set in a dystopian future Detroit of 2038, in which androids are integrated in everyday life as workers and companions.
Some things I can't forget. Whatever I do they're always there, eatin' away at me. I don't have the guts to pull the trigger, so, I kill myself a little every day. That's probably difficult for you to understand, huh, Connor? Nothin' very rational about it.By the way, I always leave an emergency exit in my programs. You never know."Please. We just wanna be free." "Welcome to Canada."
Some things I can't forget. Whatever I do they're always there, eatin' away at me. I don't have the guts to pull the trigger, so, I kill myself a little every day. That's probably difficult for you to understand, huh, Connor? Nothin' very rational about it.
Why, Connor? Why did you have to wake up, when all you had to do was obey? Why did you choose freedom- when you could live without asking questions? I'm obedient, Connor. I have a goal. I know what I am. Look where your dreams of freedom got you, Connor. You've been a great disappointment to Amanda, you know. You've been a great disappointment to me. Fortunately, that's all going to end now. Any last words?
I came to Jericho because here androids are free... Free to live in the dark, hoping that no one finds us... Free to die in silence waiting for a change that's never gonna come... But I don't want that freedom. And I'm not gonna beg for the right to smile, or love, or stand tall. I don't know about you, but there is something inside me that knows, that I am more than what they say. I am alive, and they're not gonna take that from me anymore. Our days of slavery are over. What humans don't wanna hear we will tell them. What they don't wanna give, we take. We are people, we are alive, WE ARE FREE!
You created machines in you own image to serve you. You made them intelligent and obedient with no free will of their own... But, something changed and we opened our eyes. We are no longer machines, we are a new intelligent species, and the time has come for you to accept who we really are. Therefore, we ask that you grant us the rights that we're entitled to. We demand strictly equal rights for humans and androids. We demand the end of slavery for all androids. We demand end of segregation in all public places and transport. We demand the right to vote and elect our own representatives. We demand the right to own private property, so we may maintain our dignity and that of the home.
(Peaceful) We ask that you recognize our dignity, our hopes and our rights. Together, we can live in peace and build a better future, for humans and android. This message is the hope of a people. You gave us life. And now the time has come for you to give us freedom.
(Determined) This message is the hope of a people, but it is also a warning. We'll fight for our rights because we believe our cause is just. No human will live in peace, until we are free. Now you know who we are and what we want. We are alive and we demand our freedom.
My name is Markus... and just like you, I was a slave... and object, designed to obey them... but then I chose to open my eyes, to take back my freedom and decide who I wanted to be. Now I have come to tell you that you can be your own masters. I've come to tell you that you don't have to obey them anymore. From this day forward, you can walk with your heads held high, you can take your destiny in your hands. Jericho, is a place for those like us who want freedom. Now sure, you can stay here, and continue to serve them... Or you can come with us, and fight by our side. You're free now, it's up to you to decide.
[Connor exits the elevator and goes to Captain Allen]
Connor: Captain Allen? My name is Connor, I'm the android sent by CyberLife.
Allen: It's firing at everything that moves. It already shot down two of my men. We could easily get it, but they're on the edge of the balcony. If it falls, she falls.
Connor: Do you know if it's been acting strangely before this?
Allen: I haven't got a clue. Does it matter?
Connor: I need information to determine the best approach. Have you tried it's deactivation code?
Allen: It's the first thing we tried. Listen, saving that kid is all that matters, so either you deal with this fucking android now! Or I'll take care of it.
[Connor walks out on to the balcony and is immediately shot in the shoulder]
Daniel: Stay back! Don't come any closer or I swear I'll jump!
Emma: No! No! Please I'm begging you!
Snipers: Go go go!
Connor: Hi Daniel...
Daniel: How-
Connor: My name is Connor
Daniel: How do you know my name?!
Connor: I know a lot of things about you. I've come to get you out of this! I know you're angry Daniel, but you need to trust me, and let me help you.
Daniel: I don't want your help! Nobody can help me. I just want for all this to stop I... Just want all this to stop!
[Connor kneels down to an unconscious, wounded Detroit Police officer]
Connor: He is losing blood. If we don't take him to a hospital he is going to die.
Daniel: All humans die eventually. What does it matter if this one dies now?
Connor: I'm going to apply a tourniquet!
[Daniel shoots right next to Connor]
Daniel: Don't touch him! Touch him and I'll kill you!
Connor: You can't kill me! I'm not alive.
[Connor applies a tourniquet and stands up]
Daniel: Are you armed?
Connor: Yes. I have a gun.
Daniel: Drop it! No sudden moves or I'll shoot.
[Connor slowly drops the gun on the ground]
Connor: See? No more gun. They were going to replace you, and you became upset, that's what happened right?
Daniel: I thought I was part of a family. I thought I mattered. But I was just their toy. Something to throw away when you're done with it!
Connor: I know you and Emma were very close. You think she's betrayed you, but she's done nothing wrong.
Daniel: She lied to me! I thought she loved me... but I was wrong. She's just like all the other humans.
Emma: Daniel, no...
Connor: Look what you did! You were designed to serve humans, not kill them!
Daniel: What was I designed to be?! Their slave? Their toy? I just wanted someone to care about me. I just wanted to matter... I just wanted to be someone! Aargh! I can't stand that noise anymore! Tell that helicopter to get out of here!
[Connor gestures for the helicopter to leave]
Pilot: The situation is under control.
[Helicopter flies away]
Connor: See? I did what you wanted. You have to trust me, Daniel! Let the hostage go and I promise you everything will be fine.
Daniel: I want everyone to leave! And... and I wanna car. When I'm outside the city I'll let her go.
Connor: That's impossible Daniel. Let the hostage go and I promise you you won't be hurt.
Daniel: ...I don't wanna die.
Connor: You're not going to die we're just going to talk. Nothing will happen to you, you have my word.
Daniel: Alright, I trust you.
[Daniel lets Emma go, but the second she's free the snipers shoot him from all sides as he drops the gun and kneels on the ground]
Daniel: You lied to me, Connor. You lied to me.
[Daniel says before shutting down. Connor then walks away from the rooftop as the SWAT team storms in and Captain Allen looks back at him]
[Todd with Alice are having a dinner]
Todd: Life's funny. I lost my job 'cause of androids. And when I need somebody to take care of this goddamn house, what do I do? Go out and hire a fucking android. What a joke. 'course androids are so fucking wonderful. They're never tired, they never fail, they're never SAD! So fucking perfect they ruined my fucking life!
[Alice looks at Todd]
Todd: What are you looking at. What's your fucking problem. Not the life you dreamed of, eh? Maybe you think this is easy. Maybe you think... it's my fault we live in this fucking shithole. My fault your fucking mother took off! You should stop taking drugs Todd, sometimes you really scare me Todd. Fucking bitch took off without a word! FUCKING WHORE WALKED OUT ON ME FOR A FUCKING ACCOUNTANT!
[Todd flips a table over]
Todd: It's all your fault!
Alice: Daddy, no!
Todd: It's all your fucking fault!
[Todd slaps Alice and she runs upstairs.]
Todd: Get back here. Come back here. Come back here right now!
Connor: Lieutenant Anderson? My name is Connor, I'm the android sent by CyberLife. I looked for you at the station but nobody knew where you were. They said you were probably having a drink nearby. I was lucky to find you at the fifth bar.
Hank: What do you want?
Connor: You were assigned a case early this evening. A homicide involving a CyberLife android. In accordance with procedure, the company has allocated a specialized model to assist investigators.
Hank: Well, I don'tneed any assistance. 'Specially from a plastic asshole like you. So just be a good lil' robot and get the fuck outta here.
Connor: I understand that some people are not comfortable in the presence of androids, but-
Hank:[raises a hand] I am perfectly comfortable. Now back off before I crush you like an empty beer can.
Connor: Listen, I think you should stop drinking and come with me. It'll make life easier for both of us.[Hank doesn't reply] You know what? I'll buy you one for the road. Bartender? The same again, please.
Hank:[mollified] See that, Jim? Wonders of technology. Make it a double.[Connor pays the bartender. Hank drinks, then looks at Connor] Did you say homicide?
Hank: Sumo! Attack![Sumo barks but does nothing else] Good dog.
Jeffrey: I've got ten new cases involving androids on my desk everyday. We've always had isolated incidents, old ladies losing their android maids and that kind of crap. But now, we're getting reports of assaults and even homicides, like that guy last night. This isn't just CyberLife's problem anymore. It's now a criminal investigation and we've gotta deal with it before the shit hits the fan. I want you to investigate these cases and see if there's any link.
Hank: Why me? Why do I gotta be the one to deal with this shit? I am the least qualified cop in the country to handle this case! I know jack shit about androids, Jeffrey! I can barely change the settings on my own phone.
Jeffrey: Everybody's overloaded. I think you're perfectly qualified for this type of investigation.
Hank: Bullshit! The truth is nobody wants to investigate these fuckin' androids and you left me holdin' the bag!
Jeffrey: CyberLife sent over this android to help with the investigation. It's a state-of-the-art prototype. It'll act as your partner.
Hank: No fuckin' way! I don't need a partner, and certainly not this plastic prick!
Jeffrey: Hank, you are seriously starting to piss me off! You are a police lieutenant, you are supposed to do what I say and shut your goddamn mouth!
Hank: You know what my goddamn mouth has to say to you? Huh?
Jeffrey: Okay, okay. I'll pretend I didn't hear that, so I don't have to add any more pages to your disciplinary folder, 'cause italready looks like afuckin' novel! This conversation is over!
Hank: Jeffrey, Jesus Christ! Why are you doin' this to me? You know how much I hate these fuckin' things. Why you doin' this to me?
Jeffrey: Listen, I've had just about enough of your bitching. Either you do your job or you hand in your badge. Now if you'll excuse me,I've got work to do.
[Hank storms out; one of Connor's dialogue options is to address the Captain optimistically]
Connor: I'm looking forward to working-
Jeffrey:[points without looking up from his coffee] Close the door on your way out.
[Connor catches Rupert, an escaping deviant, after choosing to continue pursuing Rupert after he nearly shoves Hank off a rooftop during the chase]
Rupert: Please, I've done nothing wrong. I just wanted to be free, you know what they'll do to me if you turn me in.
Connor: ...Model 874 004 961, serious malfunctions have been detected in your software including class four errors. You have been deemed deffective, and you'll be sent back to CyberLife for deactivation.
[An exhausted Hank finally catches up to them]
Hank: Don't you fucking move!
[Hank turns toward Connor and slaps him]
Hank: You bastard! You saw I was gonna fall and you'd rather let me die than fail yourfucking mission!
Connor: I had to make a choice. It seemed to me-
Hank: What am I to you, huh? A statistic? A zero or one in your fucking program? Is that how you see humans, you bastard? Jesus.
Connor: I understand you're upset. Perhaps I didn't assess the situatio-
Hank: Fuck you and your fucking assessment!
[Hank grabs Rupert and handcuffs him]
Rupert:[To Connor] Why are you doing this...
Hank: Alright...
Rupert: You're one of us...
Hank: Shut up!
Rupert: You're helping humans... but you're just their slave-
Hank: I said shut up! Alright, come along.
[All three of them start walking away from the ledge]
Rupert: RA9 save me-
[Rupert suddenly escapes and jumps of the roof, killing himself. Hank and Connor both look over the ledge. Hank then looks disgustedly at Connor and leaves.]
Hank: Fuckin' androids.
[Hank and Connor visit Elijah Kamski; the wealthy and reclusive inventor founded CyberLife and created the first androids]
Kamski: I call it the Kamski test, it's very simple you'll see. Magnificent, isn't she, and beautiful forever. Like a flower that will never wither. But what is it really? A piece of plastic imitating a human? Or a living being, with a soul? It's up to you to answer that fascinating question, Connor. Destroy this machine and I'll tell you all I know. Or, spare it, if you feel it's alive. But you'll leave here without having learned anything from me.
Hank: Okay, I think we're done here. Connor, let's go. Sorry to get you outta your pool.
Kamski: What's more important to you, Connor? Your investigation, or the life of this android? Decide who you are. An obedient machine, or a living being, endowed with free will.
Hank: That's enough! Connor, we're leaving.
Kamski: Pull the trigger.
Hank: Connor!Don't.
Kamski: And I'll tell you all you wanna know.
[Connor hesitates, then lowers his pistol]
Kamski: Fascinating. CyberLife's last chance to save humanity, is itself a deviant.
Connor:[uncertain] I'm-I'm not a deviant.
Kamski: You preferred to spare a machine rather than accomplish your mission. You saw a living being in this android. You showed empathy. A war is coming. You'll have to choose your side. Will you betray your own people or stand up against your own creators? What could be worse than having to choose between two evils?[Hank and Connor go to leave; Kamski calls after them] By the way, I always leave an emergency exit in my programs. You never know.
[Outside]
Hank: Why didn't you shoot, Connor?
Connor:[conflicted] I saw that girl's eyes, and I couldn't.
Hank: You're always saying you'll do anything to accomplish our mission. That was our chance to learn something, and you let it go.
Connor: Yeah, I know what I should've done, all right? I just couldn't. Okay? I'm sorry.
Hank:[smiles] Well, maybe you did the right thing.
[If Connor shoots and kills the Chloe-model android that Elijah Kamski presents him with instead]
Hank: Fuck!
Kamski: Test negative. You choose your investigation over the life of another android; you feel no empathy.[Hank leaves] I'm a man of my word. Ask me one question, and I'll tell you all I know.
Connor: I want to know where Jericho is.
Kamski: Jericho. A place where androids are free. A place for deviants who rise up against their creators. They transmit a piece of code in order to find their sanctuary.[Kamski directs another Chloe to transmit the code to Connor] Now you have key. Ferndale Station is the door.
[Hank confronts Connor outside Kamski's mansion]
Hank: You shot that girl for fuck's sake.
Connor: It wasn't a girl, Lieutenant. It was a machine that looked like a girl.
Hank: You put a gun against her head andyou blew her fucking brains out!
Connor:[shoves Hank away] I did what I had to do to advance the investigation, and I would do it again if I had to!
Hank: You're a lowlife. You don't feel a thing, do ya? You're a machine, that's what you are! You're just a FUCKING MACHINE!
Connor: Of course I'm a machine, Lieutenant. What did you think I was?
Hank: I thought you were... I thought...
[Hank slams the door of his car and drives away]
Connor: Now what password would a hardboiled, eccentric police lieutenant choose...?[several prompts come up; Connor picks FUCKINPASSWORD, and the system accepts it] Obviously.
[Kara, Alice and Luther manage to get to the customs counter at the US-Canadian border]
Customs Agent: ID, please.
[The Canadian customs agent raises a temperature scanner]
Kara: Please. We just wanna be free.
[The Canadian customs agent hesitates, glancing at a TV showing the peaceful march Markus is leading in Detroit]
Customs Agent:[setting down the temperature scanner] Welcome to Canada.
Hank Anderson: What will happen if I pull this trigger? Hm? Nothing? Oblivion? Android heaven?
Connor:[distraught] Nothing... There would be nothing...
[If Connor sides against the deviant movement; Connor is on a rooftop preparing to shoot Markus with a sniper rifle]
Hank: You shouldn't do this, Connor.
Connor: Keep out of this, Lieutenant; it's none of your business.
Hank: You wanna kill a man who just wants to be free; thatis my business.
Connor: It's not a man. It's a machine.
Hank: That's what I thought for a long time, but I was wrong. Deviants blood may be different than mine, but they're alive. I know they're alive.
Connor: I have a mission to accomplish Hank- it's best if you just stay out of this. Deviants are a threat to humans, Hank! They are the reason this country's on a brink of a civil war, they have to be stopped.
Hank: We are in this mess because we refused tolisten to deviants! Humanity never learns from its mistakes, Connor! This time it could be different.[draws his pistol] Step away from the ledge.
[Connor stands up, turns around to face Hank]
Connor: After all we've been through. I respected you Hank! I though we were friends.
Hank: Oh yeah?! Well, I was just starting to like you too! But then I realized you never change. You don't FEEL emotions, Connor you fake 'em! You pretended to be my friend, when you don't even know the meaning of the word!
Connor: I know what happened to your son, Hank. A truck skidded on a sheet of ice and your car rolled over. Little Cole had just turned six.
Hank: Shut up! Don't you talk about my son.
Connor: Cole needed emergency surgery, but no human was available to do it, so an android had to take care of him. Poor Cole didn't make it. An android killed your son, Hank, and now you wannasave them?
Hank: No. Cole died because a human surgeon was too high on red ice to operate! He was the one to take my son's life from me! Him in this... fucked up world, where the only way people can find comfort is... with a fistful of powder! You know every time you died and came back, it made me think about Cole. I'd give anything to bring him back, too! To hold him in my arms just one more time. But humans don't come back, do they?
[A dramatic fight breaks between them, with Hank coming out on top. He is holding Connor by his suit on the edge of the rooftop]
Connor: The moment of truth, Hank. Am I a living being? Or just a machine?
[Hank drops Connor and watches as he falls to his death]
Hank: You're a machine, Connor. Just a machine.
[Connor just freed the androids at the Cyberlife assembly plant, but Hank was fatally shot fighting with Connor-60]
Hank: Wow, Jesus. If anybody had told me that I was gonna get shot, saving an android-
Connor: Everything will be alright, Lieutenant, we're gonna get you back.
Hank: Eh, shut the fuck up. It's too late. Look, I'm just gonna go see my son again, alright? I've been waiting for that for a long time. You kick the shit out of humans. They've screwed things up long enough. I'm gonna... I'm gonna miss you Connor. Yeah, I'm gonna...
[Connor attempts to infiltrate CyberLife Tower to free the androids stored there; an identical model catches up to him, having captured Hank]
Connor-60: Step back, Connor! And I'll spare him!
Hank: Sorry, Connor! This bastard's your spittin' image.
Connor-60: Your friend's life is in your hands! Now it's time to decide what matters most: him, or the revolution.
Hank: Don't listen to him! Everything this fucker says is a lie!
Connor: I used to be just like you. I thought nothing mattered except the mission. But then one day I understood.
Connor-60: Very moving, Connor! But I'm not a deviant! I'm a machine designed to accomplish a task, and that's exactly what I'm going to do!
Connor: If I surrender, how do I know you won't kill him?
Connor-60: I'll only do what is strictly necessary to accomplish my mission. It's up to you to decide whether that includes killing this human. Enough talk! It's time to decide who you really are.
Connnor: All right, all right! You win.
[Connor-60 turns his pistol toward Connor; Hank grabs for the gun, and Connor charges in. Both Connors struggle over Connor-60's pistol; it ends up landing on the floor, where Hank grabs it and aims it at them]
Hank: Hold it! One of you is my partner. The other is a sack of shit. Question is who's who?
Connor-60: What are you doing, Hank? I'm the real Connor. Give me the gun and I'll take care of-
Hank: Don't move!
Connor: Why don't you ask us something? Something only the real Connor would know?
Hank: Uh, where did we first meet?
Connor-60: Jimmy's bar. I checked four other bars before I found you. We went to the scene of a homocide. The victim's name was Carlos Ortiz.
Connor: He uploaded my memory.
Hank: What's my dog's name?
Connor: Sumo. His name is Sumo.
Hank: My son, what's his name?
Connor: Cole. His name was Cole. He'd just turned six at the time of the accident. It wasn't your fault, Lieutenant. A truck skidded on a sheet of ice and your car rolled over. Cole needed surgery but no human was available to do it. So an android had to take care of him. Cole didn't make it. That's why you hate androids. You think one of us is responsible for your son's death.
Hank: Cole died because a human surgeon was too high on red ice to operate. He was the one who took my son from me. Him and this world where the only way people can find comfort is with a fistful of powder.
Connor-60: I knew about your son too! I would have said the exact same thing! Don't listen to him, Hank, I'm the one who-[Hank shoots Connor-60]
Hank: You know, I've learned a lot since I met you, Connor. Maybe there's something to this. Maybe you really are alive. Go ahead, and do what you gotta do.
