Badami

Badami, formerly known asVatapi, is a town and headquarters of ataluk by the same name, in theBagalkot district ofKarnataka,India. It was the regal capital of theBadami Chalukyas from CE 540 to 757. It is famous for its rock cut monuments such as theBadami cave temples, as well as the structural temples such as theBhutanatha temples,Badami Shivalaya andJambulingesvara temple. It is located in a ravine at the foot of a rugged, redsandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake. Badami has been selected as one of the heritage cities forHRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India.
