Zhukovsky (Russian:Жуковский,Russian pronunciation:[ʐʊˈkofskʲɪj]) is acity inMoscow Oblast, Russia, located on theMoskva River, 40 kilometers (25 mi) southeast of Moscow. Population:104,736 (2010 census);[2]101,328 (2002 census);[6]100,609 (1989 Soviet census).[7]

History

Theurban-type settlement ofStakhanovo was founded in 1935 from thedacha settlementOtdykh (literally, "Relaxation").[citation needed] It was named afterAlexey Stakhanov, a Russian miner of theStalinist era. On April 23, 1947, the settlement was granted town status and renamed Zhukovsky, in honor of scientistNikolay Zhukovsky.[citation needed]

Within theframework of administrative divisions, it is incorporated asZhukovskyCity Under Oblast Jurisdiction—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of thedistricts.[1] As amunicipal division, Zhukovsky City Under Oblast Jurisdiction is incorporated asZhukovsky Urban Okrug.[3]

Zhukovsky is a home to theM. M. Gromov Flight Research Institute andN. Ye. Zhukovsky Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute — they are two major facilities involved in testing and designing aircraft. These facilities were employers for a great portion of the city's population beforeperestroika. Also, there is situated theAeromechanics faculty ofMIPT.

There are also a number of flight testing divisions of the aviationdesign bureaus (Sukhoy,Ilyushin,Tupolev, etc.) located in the area as well as machine-building plants, paper-mill food industry - Inko,Nestlé, local bread-baking plant.

In 2008,PresidentVladimir Putin signed apresidential decree establishing the National Aircraft Industry Centre.[9]

Zhukovsky is the center oftrack and field athletics in Moscow Oblast. Most notable athletes born in Zhukovsky areYuriy Borzakovskiy, Yekaterina Podkopayeva, Andrey Yepishin, Dmitry Bogdanov, and others. In 2005, theMeteor international standardathletics stadium was opened.

There was also abandy club Strela based in Zhukovsky.

Culture

Zhukovsky museum was opened in 1979. It contains a unique collection of pilot's uniform and equipment.[10]
