Kopal was born and grew up inLitomyšl (Czechoslovakia, nowCzech Republic). In his early astronomical career, he studiedvariable stars and in particular closeeclipsing binary stars. He attendedCambridge University in 1938[1] and later that year he went toHarvard College Observatory. After the war he became head of the astronomy department at theUniversity of Manchester. He later assistedNASA with theApollo program as an external expert.
He was editor-in-chief of the journalAstrophysics and Space Science since its foundation in 1968 until his death in 1993.
Theasteroid2628 Kopal was named in his honor.
