History

[edit]

Zamyn-Üüd's actual name comes from the former Dzamiin Üüde settlement located 101 kilometres (63 mi) northwest from the modern town (44°30′N111°15′E / 44.500°N 111.250°E /44.500; 111.250).[2]

Overview

[edit]

The town is located on the old trade route betweenBeijing andUrga/Ulaanbaatar, and is now the most important border crossing betweenMongolia and thePeople's Republic of China, viaErenhot. The border control counted more than 950,000 border crossings in 2004.[3]In April 2007, the construction of a 432 kilometres (268 mi) paved road fromChoir to Zamyn-Üüd viaSainshand began. Completion was planned for October 2007.[4] However, completion of the road project was pushed back to 2013, with Sainshand to Choir section being finished in September, 2013.[5] A new expanded road border crossing was also completed in 2013 to relieve delays in crossing from China to Mongolia.[6]

The "Zamyn-Uud" Free Economic Zone was officially created in 2004. It has an area of 900 ha and is located between Zamyn-Üüd settlement and the Chinese border.[7]
