Zachary John Daniel Herrin (born November 17, 1995) is an American professionalstock car racing driver who currently competes part-time in theARCA Menards Series driving the No. 12Toyota forFast Track Racing.
Born inGlendale, California, Zach began racing motorcycles at the age of 5, competing in amateur championships until the age of 16. In 2012, Zach began his professional career in theAMA Pro SuperSport Championship.[1] Zach then moved on tosuperkarts in 2013, competing in the SKUSA Pro Tour and SKUSA SuperNationals. In 2014, Zach competed inlegends cars in the INEX Winter Nationals series.[2][3] For the 2016 season, Herrin returned to the SKUSA Pro Tour and SKUSA SuperNationals.[4]
Herrin left the motorsports industry for 4 years after discovering that he needed time to realize his authentic self as a member of theLGBT community (he is openly gay).[5][6][7] He began a career in real estate[8] and in 2022 returned to motorsports competing in the2022 ARCA Menards Series West finale atPhoenix Raceway.
He is the younger brother of former Moto2 rider and2013 AMA Superbike championJosh Herrin.
On January 16, 2022, Herrin began hisARCA series career at theDaytona Pre-Season practice,[9] driving forFast Track Racing, marking his return to professional racing sincecoming out.[10][11] He plans to compete in a limited schedule in theARCA Menards Series in 2022, then expand to a larger ARCA/NASCAR schedule in 2023.[12]
Zach is a member of the founding class of the North American expansion ofRacing Pride.[13][14]
In 2023, Zach was named toOut (magazine)'s 2023 Out100: a prestigious compilation of the year's most impactful and influential LGBTQ+ people.[15] Zach is the first motorsports athlete to receive this honor.
In 2024, Zach was honored byNASCAR's Drive for Diversity Awards in the "Developmental Series Driver" category. Zach is "an exemplary advocate for LGBTQ+ people in the motorsports industry, integrating inclusion into his ethos through building partnerships with organizations such asLambda Legal and representing the sport in a positive light both on and off the race track."[16]
