ZNetwork, formerly known asZ Communications, is aleft-wing activist-oriented media group founded in 1986 byMichael Albert andLydia Sargent.[2] It is, in broad terms, ideologicallylibertarian socialist,anti-capitalist, and heavily influenced byparticipatory economics, although much of its content is focused on critical commentary of foreign affairs.[citation needed] Its publications includeZ Magazine,ZNet, andZ Video.[3] Since early November 2022, they have all been regrouped under the nameZNetwork.
Zeta Magazine was founded by Michael Albert and Lydia Sargent in 1987, both of whom had previously co-foundedSouth End Press.[4] It was renamedZ Magazine in 1989.[5]
Founded in 1994,Z Media Institute provides classes and other sessions in how to start and producealternative media, how to better understand media, and how to develop organising skills.[6] The institute has hostedStephen Shalom presentations onparpolity a number of times.[7]
Founded in 1995, ZNet (also known asZNet,ZNetwork andZ Communications) is awebsite with contributors that includeNoam Chomsky,[8][9][10]Eduardo Galeano,[8]Boris Kagarlitsky,[8]Edward Said,[8] Chris Spannos[11] andKevin Zeese.[12][13]John Pilger described it as one of the best news sources online.[8] Rene Milan of theInstitute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies called the site a rich source of information about participism.[14]
Z Magazine is published in print and on-line monthly.
Contributors to the magazine have includedPatrick Bond[15]Noam Chomsky,[16],Ward Churchill,[17]Alexander Cockburn,Edward S. Herman,[18]bell hooks,[19] Mike Kuhlenbeck,[20]Staughton Lynd,John Ross,Juliet Schor,Holly Sklar,Cornel West,Kevin Zeese andHoward Zinn.[12] Articles written by Chomsky have been republished in theNew Statesman.[16][21]
In a 2005 interview withJoshua Frank,Ward Churchill discussed issues he had withZ Magazine. Churchill said an article he worked on was not published for two years and was misattributed. He also felt Albert and Sargent had greater influence than others involved with the publication.[17]
In 2012,George Monbiot wrote a critical article about the book The Politics of Genocide byEdward Herman and David Peterson. Znet published a response to Monbiot from Herman and Peterson. Monbiot said he askedMichael Albert to publishMartin Shaw's review of Herman and Peterson's book on Znet to balance the comments from Herman and Peterson. Albert refused.[22]
