Yvelines (French pronunciation:[ivlin]) is adepartment in the western part of theÎle-de-Franceregion in NorthernFrance. In 2019, it had a population of 1,448,207.[4] Itsprefecture isVersailles, home to thePalace of Versailles, the principal residence of the King of France from 1682 until 1789, aUNESCOWorld Heritage Site since 1979. Yvelines'subprefectures areSaint-Germain-en-Laye,Mantes-la-Jolie andRambouillet.

History

[edit]

Yvelines was created from the western part of the former department ofSeine-et-Oise on 1 January 1968 in accordance with a law passed on 10 January 1964 and adécret d'application (a decree specifying how a law should be enforced) from 26 February 1965. It inherited Seine-et-Oise's official number of 78 since it took up the largest portion of its territory. In addition to this, it inherited Seine-et-Oise's prefecture,Versailles.

Yvelines derives its name from theForest of Yveline, next toRambouillet.[5]

It gained thecommunes ofChâteaufort andToussus-le-Noble from the adjacent department ofEssonne in 1969.

The departmental capital,Versailles, which grew up aroundLouis XIV's château, was also theFrenchcapital for more than a century under theAncien Régime and again between 1871 and 1879 during the early years of theThird Republic. Since then the château has continued to welcome theFrench Parliament when it is called upon to sit in acongressional sitting (with both houses sitting together) in order to enactconstitutional changes or to listen to a formal declaration by thePresident.[6]

1 This group is made up largely of former French settlers, such aspieds-noirs inNorthwest Africa, followed by former colonial citizens who had French citizenship at birth (such as was often the case for the native elite in French colonies), as well as to a lesser extent foreign-born children of French expatriates. A foreign country is understood as a country not part of France in 1999, so a person born for example in 1950 in Algeria, when Algeria was an integral part of France, is nonetheless listed as a person born in a foreign country in French statistics.

2 An immigrant is a person born in a foreign country not having French citizenship at birth. An immigrant may have acquired French citizenship since moving to France, but is still considered an immigrant in French statistics. On the other hand, persons born in France with foreign citizenship (the children of immigrants) are not listed as immigrants.
