Yusuhara (檮原町,Yusuhara-chō) is atown located inTakaoka District,Kōchi Prefecture,Japan. As of 31 July 2022[update], the town had an estimatedpopulation of 3,285 and apopulation density of 14 persons per km².[1] The total area of the town is 236.45 square kilometres (91.29 sq mi).
Yusuhara is located in the northwestern part of Kōchi Prefecture, on the island ofShikoku, at the western end of theShikoku Mountains. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, forests cover 91% of the town's area.

Yusuhara has ahumid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classificationCfa) with hot, humid summers and cool winters. There is significant precipitation throughout the year, especially during June and July. The average annual temperature in Yusuhara is 13.4 °C (56.1 °F). The average annual rainfall is 2,728.7 mm (107.43 in) with July as the wettest month. The temperatures are highest on average in August, at around 24.3 °C (75.7 °F), and lowest in January, at around 2.6 °C (36.7 °F).[2] The highest temperature ever recorded in Yusuhara was 38.7 °C (101.7 °F) on 12 August 2013; the coldest temperature ever recorded was −12.0 °C (10.4 °F) on 1 January 1981.[3]

As with all of Kōchi Prefecture, the area of Yusuhara was part of ancientTosa Province. During theEdo period, the area was part of the holdings ofTosa Domain ruled by theYamauchi clan from their seat atKōchi Castle. The village of Yusuhara was established with the creation of the modern municipalities system on October 1, 1889. It was raised to town status on November 4, 1966. It was designated as a"Environmental model city" in 2009.
Yusuhara has amayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and aunicameral town council of seven members. Yusuhara, together with the municipalities of Nakatosa, Tsuno and Shimanto, contributes two members to the Kōchi Prefectural Assembly. In terms of national politics, the town is part of Kōchi 2nd district of thelower house of theDiet of Japan.
The economy of Yusuhara is almost entirely agricultural and forestry. The town produces most of its own electricity via wind power, solar power and small hydroelectric turbines.
Yusuhara has one public combined elementary/middle school operated by the village government, and one public high school operated by the Kōchi Prefectural Board of Education.
The town does not have any passenger railroad service. The nearest passenger railway station isSusaki Station inSusaki.
