British Indian scholar (1946 - 2019)
Yusuf ibn Suleman ibn Qasim Motala (25 November 1946 – 8 September 2019) was aBritish Indian Sunni Muslim scholar, founder ofDarul Uloom Bury and one of the disciples ofZakariyya Kandhlawi.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]Yusuf Motala was born inNani Naroli inGujarat,British India, on 25 November 1946. He graduated fromMazahir Uloom,[3] where he studied under Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhlawi andMuhammad Yunus Jaunpuri.[4]
Upon the instruction of Zakariyya Kandhlawi, Maulana Yusuf Motala establishedDarul Uloom Al-Arabiyyah Al-Islamiyyah inHolcombe,Bury, Lancashire, in 1973.[5] He subsequently established several other educational institutes.[6] He was included in the 2019 list of "The 500 Most Influential Muslims," published annually by theRoyal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre.[4]
He died in Toronto, Canada on 8 September 2019 following a heart attack.[2]
