TheYugoslav national final to select their entry was held on 7 March 1986, at thePalace of Youth and Sports inPristina, and was hosted byEnver Petrovci. 350 songs were submitted for the national final.[1]
Sixteen songs made it to the national final, which was broadcast by JRT affiliates to all of the regions of Yugoslavia. The winner was decided by the votes of eight regional juries (Sarajevo,Zagreb,Skopje,Titograd,Belgrade,Ljubljana, Pristina andNovi Sad).
The winning entry was "Željo moja", performed by Croatian singerDoris Dragović and written by Zrinko Tutić.

The contest was broadcast on several channels of JRT. The contest was broadcast on television onTV Beograd 1,TV Novi Sad,TV Sarajevo 1,TV Titograd 1, andTV Zagreb 1, all with commentary provided byKsenija Urličić [hr], as well as onTV Koper-Capodistria,TV Ljubljana 1,TV Prishtina, andTV Skopje 1.[2][3][4][5] The contest was also broadcast on radio onRadio Ljubljana 2.[6]
Dragović was the second performer on the night of the Contest, followingLuxembourg and precedingFrance. At the close of the voting the song had received 49 points, placing 11th in a field of 20 competing countries.[7] The Yugoslav jury awarded its 12 points to Turkey.[8]
