"You Belong to My Heart" is the name of an English-language version of the MexicanBolerosong "Solamente una vez" ("Only Once" in English). This song was composed by Mexican songwriterAgustín Lara and originally performed by singerAna María González and tenorJosé Mojica in the 1941 filmMelodías de América.[1][2]

After that, the original Spanish-language version was very popular inMexico andCuba as well as being recorded by many of the greatest Bolero interpreters such asLos Panchos in 1951.[3]

"Solamente una vez", retitled "You Belong to My Heart", was featured in theDisney filmThe Three Caballeros with English lyrics written byRay Gilbert and sung byDora Luz.[21]Gilbert's lyrics bear no similarity to Lara's original Spanish language lyrics.

This song is on theorange disc ofClassic Disney: 60 Years of Musical Magic.

Bing Crosby and theXavier Cugat orchestra recorded a version of the song on February 11, 1945 forDecca Records[22] as catalog number 23413. It first reached theBillboard magazine Best Seller chart on May 24, 1945, and lasted 9 weeks on the chart, peaking at #4.[23]

TheCharlie Spivak orchestra released a version byRCA Victor Records as catalog number 20-1663. It first reached theBillboard magazine Best Seller chart on May 17, 1945 and lasted 2 weeks on the chart, peaking at #9.[23]

In 1949Alfredo Antonini and his orchestra collaborated with Victoria Cordova (vocalist) andJohn Serry Sr. to record the song forMuzak.[24]

In 1955, jazz pianistJack Pleis recorded it for his album,Music from Disneyland.

Elvis Presley, as part of theMillion Dollar Quartet, performed a shortened version of the song, mixing Agustín Lara's original Spanish lyrics and Ray Gilbert's English lyrics.[25]

SingersAndy Russell,Jerry Vale,Engelbert Humperdinck andGene Autry also recorded versions mixing Lara's and Gilbert's lyrics.[21][26][27]

Disney would use this song again in their short filmPluto's Blue Note (1947).

Tito Guizar sang the song in theRoy Rogers filmThe Gay Ranchero (1948), whileEzio Pinza performed a version mixing Lara's and Gilbert's lyrics inMr. Imperium (1951), with Lana Turner and the Guadalajara Trio.[21]

Gene Autry sang the song in the filmThe Big Sombrero (1949).

The song is used insoundtrack of the 2004 filmNapoleon Dynamite.

The song was also cut from a Yvonne de Carlo and Vittorio Gasman scene in the 1953 movieSombrero.

Only Once in My Life

AnotherEnglish language version, titled "Only Once in My Life" was written by Janis and Rick Carnes and was released in 1998. These lyrics are not a translation of the original Spanish lyrics.
