Yarnemia ascidiformis is afossil tentatively classified as atunicate. WhileY. ascidiformis looks similar to tunicates, the oldest unequivocal tunicate,Shankouclava[1] dates to theCambrian period, whileY. ascidiformis isEdiacaran in age.[2][3]
Theholotype fossil ofYarnemia was found from theUst-Pinega Formation between 1976 and 1978, and described in 1984.
The generic nameYarnemia comes from the village ofYarnema near which the first specimens were found. The specific epithet, ascidiformis, refers to the likeness toascidians.
