Yalarnnga (alsoJalarnnga,Jalanga,Yelina,Yellunga,Yellanga,Yalarrnnga,Yalanga orYalluna[2]) is anextinctAustralian Aboriginal language of thePama–Nyunganlanguage family, that may be related to theKalkatungu language.[1][3] It was formerly spoken by theYalarnnga people in areas near theGulf of Carpentaria the towns ofDajarra andCloncurry in far northwesternQueensland.[3][4] The last native speaker died in 1980.[5] It is a suffixingagglutinative language with no attested prefixes.[2]

Classification

[edit]

Yalarnnga is sometimes grouped withKalkatungu as theKalkatungic (Galgadungic) branch of thePama–Nyungan family. O'Grady et al.,[6] however, classify Kalkatungu as the sole member of the "Kalkatungic group" of the Pama-Nyungan family, and Dixon (2002)[7] regards Kalkatungic as anareal group.
