Yalamber or Yalung, Yalambar, Yalamwar, Yalamver (Nepali:यलम्बर) was aKirati warrior and first king of theKirata kingdom in Nepal, which he established in 800 B.C.[1] His capital was Yalakhom, present dayKathmandu Valley (Thankot) after conqueringCentral Nepal and his kingdom extended from riverTrishuli in the west to riverTeesta in the east ofBhutan.[2][3][1]Patan is also known asLalitpur in Nepali and Yala inNewar in remembrance of Yalamber as he ruled the regions.

Brian Houghton Hodgson elaborated more on the origins.

The epicMahabharata mentions theKiratas as a tribe living in Himawat Khanda like thePulindas andChinas,Hunas,Pahlavas,Sakas,Yavanas, Savaras,Paundras,Kanchis,Dravidas,Sinhalas and Keralas. All these tribes were described as Mlechha tribes. TheKamvojas,Gandharas, Kiratas and Barbaras were also mentioned together as northern tribes. TheYavanas, the Kiratas, theGandharvas, theChinas, the Savaras, the Barbaras, theSakas, theTusharas, the Kankas, the Pathavas, theAndhras, theMadrakas, thePaundras, thePulindas, the Ramathas, theKamvojas were mentioned together as tribes beyond the kingdoms ofAryavarta.

In Nepal, Kirati kingYalambar, is believed to be theBarbarik of the Mahabharata, son ofGhatotkach and grandest son ofBheem.Barbarik had the dubious honor of being slain in thebattle of the Mahabharata, in which gods and mortals fought alongside each other. Legend credits him with meetingIndra, the lord of heaven, who ventured into the Valley in human guise. It is said that during the battle of Mahabharata, Barbarik went to witness the battle with a vow to take the side of the losing party. Lord Krishna, knowing the vow of Barbarik and his strength of three arrows, thought that the war would end with only one survival and that is Barbarik himself by killing warriors of both sides. So, by a clever stroke of diplomacy, LordKrishna cut off Barbarik's head. So, in his honorIndrajatra is celebrated and his head is worshipped as the godAkash Bhairav.[4] Barbarik is also known asKhatushyam andBaliyadev inRajasthan andGujarat respectively.

The present-day Newars, who are the descendants ofKirat people of pre-history and also the earliest inhabitants and settlers of Kathmandu valley, celebrateYenya orIndrajatra in Kathmandu. Certain caste groups among the Newars are the caregivers forAakash Bhairava temple in Indrachowk, the heart of Kathmandu.

His dynasty was succeeded byLicchavi (kingdom). His successors ruled Kathmandu valley for about 31 generations which lasted nearly 1225 years. A list of all 32 Kirat Kings is given in the below section.
