Yagna Shetty is an Indian actress known for her work inKannada cinema. She made her debut in the 2007 filmOndu Preethiya Kathe, following which she appeared inEddelu Manjunatha, a performance that won her aFilmfare Special Award. She got noticed for her performances inSugreeva (2010) andAllide Nammane Illi Bande Summane (2011).[2] Known for portraying deglamorous and serious roles, she went on to appear in other critical and commercial successes such asLove Guru (2009),Kalla Malla Sulla (2011) andUlidavaru Kandanthe (2014). Her performance inAct 1978 (2020), won her theFilmfare Award for Best Actress – Kannada.[3]
Yagna Shetty was born to Umesh Shetty and Jayanti Shetty, into theTuluva community inKudremukh,Karnataka. She has three siblings – Mahalaxmi, Gayatri and Ashwini. She completed her schooling at the Kendriya School inPanambur,Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) course at the SDM College inMangalore and later pursuedMaster of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance at theManipal University.[4][5]
Shetty auditioned for her debut role in the 2007Kannada language filmOndu Preethiya Kathe inHindi due to her non fluency in Kannada at the time. She was cast as the female lead opposite Shanker Aryan.[6] The film received positive reviews from critics, with Shetty's performance receiving praise.Rediff in its review called it a "promising debut".[7] In 2009, she starred in two films,Eddelu Manjunatha andLove Guru, and received critical acclaim for her performances in both the films. For her portrayal of Gowri in the comedy filmEddelu Manjunatha, the wife of Manjunatha (played byJaggesh), a hard working woman struggling to make ends meet, she received theFilmfare Special Award.[8] For her performance in the latter film, received aFilmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination.
Shetty had two releases in 2010. Her first role was inSugreeva, in which she was cast oppositeShiva Rajkumar as his wife and of a mother to a wannabeMichael Jackson.Rediff called her performance in the film "convincing".[9] In her next releaseKari Chirathe, she played the role of Bharathi, who falls in love with a mentally unstable person (played byDuniya Vijay). 2011 saw three releases of Shetty, among which was the comedy filmKalla Malla Sulla, a performance for which she received critical acclaim, playing the role of the wife of a media baron (played byRamesh Arvind).[10]
Shetty's first release of 2014 wasKwatle, a film that was received largely negative reviews from critics.The Times of India in its review called her performance "a complete failure".[11] In her next film, she starred in a supporting role as Sharada, a fishwife and the love interest of Munna (played byKishore) inUlidavaru Kandanthe, a critical success but a commercial failure. In her final release of 2014, she played Yagna inSadagara, which received mixed reviews from critics.[12] She worked on the thriller filmOctopus.[13] As of March 2015, Shetty has the delayed projectLove JunctionandH/34 Pallavi Talkies up for release.[14][15] She is currently filming withRamabai, playing the titular role, a biographical film on the life of Ramabai, the first wife of social reformerB. R. Ambedkar[16] andRam Gopal Varma'sKilling Veerappan asMuthulakshmi, the wife of slain forest brigand,Veerappan.[17]
In 2016, Shetty made her debut in television with the soap opera,Vaarasdaara. Dealing with the issue offemale infanticide, she plays the role of a mother in the soap.[18][19]
Yagna Shetty married Sandeep Shetty[1] on 30 October 2019 in Mangalore.[20]
