Xuyi is acounty under the administration ofHuai'an Prefecture in centralJiangsu Province in easternChina. The southernmost of Huai'an'scounty-level divisions, it borders theprefecture-level cities ofSuqian, Jiangsu, to the north andChuzhou,Anhui, to the south and west. Xuyi is the site of theMing Zuling tombs and also noted for production of crayfish.

Name

[edit]

Xuyi is theatonalpinyinromanization of theStandard Mandarinpronunciation of theChinese name盱眙. The same name was previously romanized asHsü-i inWade-Giles andChuyi inPostal Map romanization. The meaning of the name is unclear, but probably derives from phonetic transcription of an earlier name from theDongyi orWu who once held the area. It has also beenvariously derived from the idea of looking ahead with one's eyes opened wide—in reference to its position on a hill in wide plain[2][3]—or to another nearby hill named Xuyi.[4]

History

[edit]
Further information:Sizhou andMing Zuling

In medieval China, the area around Xuyi was administered as part of the prefecture or subprefecture ofSizhou. It was the hometown ofZhu Yuanzhang's family, which fled toFengyang before his birth and rise to power as theHongwu Emperor of theMing. He subsequently erected the expansiveMing Zuling tomb nearby, whereveneration could be offered to his grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, all posthumously elevated to the dignity of honoraryemperors. Under the Ming, the area was part ofNanzhili, the special directly administered district around the southern capital atNanjing.

Under theQing, the province was renamedJiangnan. Sizhou fell under its "Left" Governor and was later made part ofAnhui Province. During the reign of theKangxi Emperor, theYellow River—then still flowing along a course south ofShandong—diverted to join theHuai further upstream. Its silt blocked the previous course of the Huai and causedHongze Lake to grow enormously, swallowing both Sizhou and Ming Zuling tombs. With the previous county seat submerged, administration was moved first to Xuyi in 1680 and then west to the newSi County in 1777.

After theestablishment of thePeople's Republic of China, Xuyi andSihong were both moved from Anhui to Jiangsu in 1955 to allow for unified administration for the entire area around Hongze Lake.[5] By the early 1960s, the lake had receded enough that the long-flooded Ming Zuling was rediscovered. After theCultural Revolution ended, the provincial and national cultural administrations excavated and restored the tombs.[6]
