Background

[edit]

Theward was created in1931,[1] following the Manchester Extension Act 1930, which gave the Wythenshawe estate to the Manchester corporation.[2] Its covered the formercivil parishes ofBaguley,Northenden, andNorthen Etchells which had previously belonged toBucklow Rural District. Its boundaries were altered in1950,[3] with that part of the ward north of theCheshire Lines Railway transferred to the newNorthenden ward. In1954, the ward was abolished, and its area was divided between theBaguley,Benchill, andWoodhouse Park wards.[4]

From 1931 until 1945, the ward formed part of theAltrincham Parliamentary constituency;[5] from 1945 until 1950 it was part of theBucklow Parliamentary constituency;[6] from 1950 until its abolition it was part of theManchester Wythenshawe Parliamentary constituency.[7][8]
